Nikkor AF-S lenses are the latest version of Nikkor lenses

AF-S have an on board, ultra fast auto focusing motor.

The older AF lenses depend upon the auto-focus motor in all but the entry level cameras like the D3000 and D5000 series Nikon cameras.

If you buy a Nikkor AF lens, you will have to manually focus it using your fine D3100 camera.

The af-s lens will auto focus on your camera. The af lens will not.

The only Nikon lenses that will auto focus on your Nikon D3100 are the more expensive AF-S models. To lower the costs and be more price competitive Nikon eliminated the focusing motor in their entry-level models. Of course they make more money selling you AF-S lenses than they make selling you a camera.

On your camera body, you can fit an AF lens but you will need to manually focus it. The AF-S version will autofocus.
