What is the auto focus motor in a Camera?

I've bought Nikon D5200. My friend told me not to buy it. He said that it doesn't have Auto Focus Motor. So I want to know '' Is there any problem if I don't have Auto Focus Motor?''

Autofocus (AF) is a camera feature that instantly makes your subject appear sharp in the picture. The AF motor is the part that physically turns the inner lens barrel to establish proper focus. Nikon, in an attempt to make certain camera bodies cheaper while maintaining a certain level of user control, which is what they are best known for, produced camera models without that AF motor. Autofocus in those models can still be achieved using a lens with an AF motor so all hope is not lost. All of these models lacking the AF motor are at the low end or entry-level. Take note that Nikon also makes some lenses without the autofocus motor which adds to the confusion. If you are a true yellow-blooded Nikonian, it all makes sense. Here is a guide on which body will autofocus with what lens model as well as other compatibility issues.

It just means that you have to buy motorised (AF-S) lenses if you want autofocus. The D7xxx series and up have a body-mounted motor to physically focus the lens, but this was removed from the budget D3xxx and D5xxx to lower costs.

Sony and Pentax have always used body motors, but both produce a small number of motorised lenses, for when the lens needs exceptionally fast focus, or a more powerful motor.

Canon, of course, have never developed a motorised body - all of their lenses have motors, and have done since the introduction of the EF mount.

The only issue with not having a focusing motor in the Nikon D5200 body is that you must buy the Nikon AF-S lenses if you want auto focus. Nikon AF lenses work perfectly on the D5200 but must be manually focused. So buy the D5200 with the standard kit zoom and plan on spending the next year or so learning how to use the camera and lens. Take a couple of photography classes. Enjoy.

Most lenses these days have autofocus motors within them, so you do not have to buy a camersa that has an autofocus motor in the camera body. But some specialist lenses and older lenses don't have autofocus motors, so you need a camera with autofocus motor for those lenses.

Stick with the D5200 for the moment, it will probably do all that you need for some years to come.
