I'm in photography class and my teacher allowed me to take pictures with my iPhone for now. I'm looking for cameras to buy but I seriously have no idea what to get. What should a good camera have? Any tips and opinion? I like canon and Nikon

For a start: ask your teacher for advice, since he/she would have some knowledge of the sort of photography you like to do. A DSLR is the most versatile type of camera, and the type offering the greatest image quality. Don't worry so much about brand, as long as you stick to the good photo brands. In the UK there are only 4 mainstream brands of DSLR on sale - Nikon, Canon, Sony, Pentax, and all are good. DSLRs start at about £300/$450.

You list two popular DSLR cameras is that what you have in mind? With their expensive interchangeable lenses. Well how about including Pentax?
You need to tells us your budget, how much you can spend on this project. That will dictate weather you opt for a great "bridge' type camera with all the bells & whistles of a DSLR. Or a DSLR where you don't mind saving and spending for a full compliment of lenses that you will need like a portrait lens, an extended telephoto like a 50-200mm., a macro lens to do close ups flowers and coin and other small objects.

A bridge camera should have at least a 20x power zoom lens, the longer lenses (more powerful) are harder to hold steady. Bridge cameras run from about $150 to $400. GREAT bridge cameras are Fuji, Canon, and Pentax. A DSLR usually starts at about $500.00 with only a short zoom lens of 18-55mm. All other lenses usually run from about $300 to $1500.00 and more.

Look for one with good quality pictures and good zoom, my sister has one where if she zooms in to the moon she can see the craters. I don't know what it's called but maybe you can find something good

Therefore you'll come to deep understanding of what the prime lens can and can't do. You can get that sort of knowledge with a zoom but not at the same level. Plus the prime lenses allow you to take photos in doors easier since they allow a lot more light than zooms. So you'll end up getting a body/lens for less, and learning more in the processes too.

If I were a tutor, I'd throw anyone who couldn't see beyond Canon and Nikon off my course.

Pentax K50 is a great starter camera, as is the Canon T3, and the Nikon D3100.
If those are out of your price range, then go to keh.com and I'm certain that you'll be able to find a used DSLR that's within your budget. As for lenses, a zoom 18-55 is the general purpose kit lens that comes with many entry-level cameras. However, getting a 35mm lens or a 50mm lens will force you to work harder when composing the shot.

Well, let's start with the category. To learn photography, you need a DSLR. With a DSLR you will learn aperture, shutter speed and ISO control, as well as manual focus. There are several entry level DSLR cameras. These are: the Sony Alpha SLT-A58 - $450, Canon T3 - $460, Nikon D3100 - $480, and Pentax K-500 - $400.

These are all excellent cameras that will be good for your class and beyond.

You should KNOW what type of camera you need (especially if you've been listening), and you should be willing to look at All the alternatives in your price-range.

Sony shoot better video, while all Pentax models have pentaprism viewfinders and the ability to meter with manual-focus lenses. Sony's sensors are so good, Pentax and Nikon buy them for use in their DSLRs.

Look at the Canon Powershot series of cameras. All are good and produce excellent photos and video. It just depends on what advanced features you want and how much you're willing to pay for them.

A Canon 60D would be good.
