Nikon 18-105mm lens? How is it?

So I'm thinking about upgrading from my kit lens to the 18-105. But after reading a LOT of reviews, I found that a lot of people complained about the plastic mount causing the lens to break. Has anybody had experience with this lens, and how do you like it?

Added (1). I used to own the 55-300mm, but it was just too much of a hassle. If you went to do things closer to you you'd have to switch to the 18-55, and then I'd have to switch back again for more zoom. Plus it was TOO heavy! So I sold that lens.

If you are referring to the Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-105mm1:3.5-5.6G ED (VR) I use it all the time, with no problems. It is a great lens, but also quite heavy. And I have done wilderness backpacking trips with the lens.

Ideally, you don't upgrade lenses. You buy additional lenses to increase your flexibility as a photographer. That 55-300mm lens was the one!

Now, if your goal is to stick with only just a single lens then 18-105mm won't be enough. Try the 18-280mm or better yet, the 18-300mm.

Zoom is nothing more than the ability of the lens to change focal length or angle of view. A 500mm non-zooming lens (1X) can make a distant subject seem closer to you than the 18-300mm which has a 16.67X zoom power. You are wanting more telephoto.

Switching lenses is the norm in the dSLR world. If you hate switching lenses then stick to your 18-55mm and walk instead. You can get near your subject matter for free and take a much better picture at a closer distance. Now if you hate walking…

What lens do you have now?
If you have the standard 18-55 kit lens, it might make more sense to buy one of these two:

It'll give you a larger range, whereas the 18-105 duplicates a lot of the range you already have.

Back when I owned a DX body, I had a couple lenses with plastic mounts and I never had any trouble with them, but of course that is just one experience out of thousands.
