Which would you choose for a Nikon FX body such as D700 or D800

Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 FX AF-S G ED
or
Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 VC USD Lens

Some professionals advocate the Tamron. Budget seems to dictate Tamron and DXO also seems to favour the Tamron but which IN YOUR OPINION is actually the more preferable lens?

The preferable one is the branded one to match your body.

There are two ways to look at how you buy lenses.

* Image quality
* Expected life of the lens before auto-focus and the lens aperture begin to become slow when operating it.

I have some very old Nikkor lenses (Nikkor AI, manual focus lenses) and they still focus smoothly and the lens apertures are not sluggish (which can cause slight overexposure on the first part of the film or sensor when the shutter begins to open.

If you are an amateur, using your camera and lenses a few times a month, then the Tamron lens should last you a couple of decades.

I on the other hand, you are a pro shooter and will be using that lens, day in and day out, I would choose the Nikkor since it is more robust and can take the repeated auto-focusing as the photographer shoots up to three assignments a day

Budget and DxoMark favor the Tamron. Who am I to argue? Besides, I like my Tamron 18-270mm PZD lens a lot. Plus, I see that the Nikkor is not a VR lens. Sure like that extra 3 or 4 stops for hand held shots.

The Tamron has VC (vibration compensation), the equivalent of Nikon'd VR, but Nikon's 24-70mm f2.8 lacks VR.
According to Photozone the Tamron seems to be close to the Nikon in sharpness, although the Nikon seems to be a slightly ahead. They found the Nikon to be better built.

I guess you didn't get the memo yet.

When shopping for lenses, always get the one with the same brand as your camera. If you can't afford that, look at Tokina, Sigma then Tamron in that order.
