Nikkor 40mm micro vs 18-55 mm?
I currently have the 18-55 nikkor lens and was rhinking of purchasing a 40 mm macro lens for macro pics, is it worth it considering I can still get close with my current lens?
NIkkor
There's NO vs.
One is a lens that can shoot landscapes, groups, full body shots and head and shoulder portraits, the 18-55 mm lens
The other is a macro lens, which can be used to photograph image to subject ratios of 1:1 as well as other subjects out to infinity like any other lens
Each has its own uses. Your current lens is NOT designed to shoot closeup shots like a macro is. I would have though you would have discovered this when trying to do so with your current lens
The Nikkor lens would be much better than your 18-55mm!
You can get close with your current lens, but there's a significant quality drawback and you can't do true macro. True macro involves literally filling the entire frame with the small object you're trying to shoot (or as close to full as you can) to achieve as much detail as possible. If you were to crop an image from your 18-55, it would be much less beautiful than a true macro shot.
If you indeed want to take macro shots, you will need the macro lens. The kit lens can't do that.
