Fx lens on a dx body? - 1

I currently have a DX body and I wanted to get a new lens. I was looking at a AF-S NIKKOR 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G ED and wondered if it would actually work well with it.

Yes it will be fine and whatever Nikon body you have, the lens will autofocus as it's an AF-S lens.

Although the Nikon AF-S 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G zoom will work perfectly on your Nikon DSLR, in my opinion its a waste of money because its a slow, variable aperture lens.

A far better choice in my opinion would be the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 constant aperture zoom. Its much, much better in low light situations and the cost is a mere $52.05 more than the slow, variable aperture Nikon version.

Prices at B&H - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/...ovideo.com
Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 zoom: $799.00
Nikon 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G zoom: $746.95

Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 review:
http://www.dpreview.com/...-18-35-1-8

An aperture of f/1.8 is 2 full stops faster than an aperture of f/3.5 and 2-2/3 stops faster than an aperture of f/4.5. What does this mean in the real world? Suppose you're using the Nikon 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5 indoors in an average lit living room. At 18mm and f/3.5 using an ISO of 800 lets say your shutter speed is 1/60 sec. If you zoom to 35mm at f/4.5 your shutter speed will decrease to 1/40 sec. Neither shutter speed is sufficient to prevent blur caused by subject movement. Now substitute the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 and under the same conditions and still using ISO 800 your shutter speed becomes 2 stops faster - from 1/60 sec. To 1/250 sec. When you zoom from 18mm to 35mm with the Sigma your shutter speed stays at 1/250 sec. To achieve the same 1/250 sec. Shutter speed with the Nikon lens at 18mm will require an ISO of 3200 and if you zoom to 35mm and want to maintain a 1/250 sec. Shutter speed you'll ned to change to ISO 5000.

Now do you see why the Sigma is a better choice?

An FX lens is a full frame lens.
A DX lens is a crop-sensor lens.

Here are some combinations:

A DX lens WILL work with a DX body.
A DX lens WILL NOT work with an FX body.
An FX lens WILL work with a DX body.
An FX lens WILL work with an FX body.

Hope that helps.
