Is the Nikon 20mm f/2.8 AF-D any good?

I've been after a 16-35mm f/4 VR for a while now, but trying to get one is like attempting to purchase weapons grade plutonium.

I thought I may give the 20mm AF-D as a stop gap. Does anyone have any knowledge of this lens?

I'm ok for AF. All my bodies have in built in AF.

It is a great lens if you have a full frame camera.

If you have a 18-55 mm lens, tape it at 20 mm and walk around for a day or two to see that a 20 mm lens will do for you.

Spending $650 lens as a "stop gap" is more than I would spend, especially if you really want the 16-35 mm lens.

I have one that I bought used a few years ago. Edges are a little soft at f2.8. Stopped down to about f5.6 it is very sharp from edge to edge. I don't remember my exact experiments with it. I don't use it very often. The distance scale has been helpful for dialing it to get a lot of depth of field like this shot at f9

It won't be wide enough but it will be faster than what you thought it would be. It's not a stop gap lens knowing how much it costs and personally, I'd go for it instead of the 16-35mm.
