Forget a lens cover, get a skylight or UV filter. The first thing I and many professionals do when we get a new camera is to put a filter as mentioned on the lens.

Reasons:
1. A "UV" filter protects your precious lens from dirt and scratches. This usually comes from cleaning the lens on the camera. Even if you use a light touch, the lens coating eventually wares off and is either non replaceable or very expensive to have re-coated.
2. Putting a filter on the lens right away means cleaning only the filter from time to time. And if you scratch the filter, for a small sum of $15 or less you can replace the filter yourself.

So the moral of this story, get a UV or Skylight filter, either slip on or screw in.

While I agree with Nick on using a UV(0) filter to protect the front lens element, I still use a lens cap to protect the filter from getting marred up.

If you look on the front of the lens, you will see something like xxΦ (ie. 52Φ, 58mmΦ, 72Φ, etcetera). That is the filter/cap size in millimeters for that lens. Any local camera shop would have a replacement cap for about $3.

Depends on your camera and/or lens. Lens thread information is located on the front of the lens. If it's the 18-55 kit lens, it uses a 52mm thread.
