What shutter speed should i set my camera?

I have a Nikon d3000 and I recently got a 1300mm telephoto lens. What should my shutter speed be set at to get clear bright photos?

It really depends on how much light is available, and whether you want to capture something moving or not. It's all about circumstance--what I usually do on any given day is take a few random pictures to calibrate my camera, before I do any actual photography. As the day passes and it gets cloudier/less cloudy, brighter/darker, etc. You will have to adjust your settings.

Whichever shutter speed your camera's internal light meter tells you to use.

Shutter speed has nothing to do with the focal length of the lens you are using.

How is it possible that you have a fully adjustable camera, but don't understand that your shutter speed will change for almost every photo based on the available light?

That will be a fixed aperture lens, probably f/16 at that.

You will need a good tripod, or a very high shutter speed, to get anything useful out of it.

If you are attempting to hand hold the lens, you need to use a shutter speed of at least 12/000th second

Usually when using a lens longer than 400 mm, a tripod is recommended
