How does the video limit work in Nikon D3100?

So in D3100 there's a 10 minute video limit, does that mean that i can record for 10 minutes than the video will stop and i will be able to record again? Or the camera can only record up to 10 minutes?

The camera stops at 10 mins and you can start again. BUT, the sensor gets hot, which will also cause it to shut down - once that happens you'll have to wait until it cools enough.

IT records for that much then stops, yes. You can record another 10 minutes after saving is done. Beware though. That time limit is there to prevent your camera's digital sensor from burning itself. If you need to record longer, get the right tool, a digital camcorder. See Sony Handycam.

If you are shooting from a script, the longest takes will probably be less than a minute or two.

The limits are based upon two things. 1) the largest file size is 4 gb (about 17-20 minutes) or 2) when the sensor gets dangerously hot, enough to damage the sensor, the camera shuts off

These limits apply to All digital SLR cameras. To be able to shoot longer takes, you need to buy an actual video camera like a $350 camcorder.

Keep your takes short and this you will never need worry about these limitations.
