Get the Nikon D5200 http://www.amazon.com/...lectronics. A much more professional camera than the D3000 which I think is very much out dated. The D5200 has a much better sensor (24.1 mp) as well as better stabilization, an better features overall. It also has an excellent auto focus.

The D5200 is not enough of an upgrade as it is still an entry level DSLR and lacks many of the same features the D3000 lacks, such as no in-body focus motor, no speedlight remote commander system, and a fairly mediocre shutter delay.

The next level up (advanced amateur) is the D7100 or D7000. They are advanced systems with in-body focus motor (they can autofocus AF lenses), they can remote control a speedlight in iTTL mode, and they have a very low shutter lag - which is crucial for sports and action photography.

Go for the D7000. That will be compatible with your existing and old lenses. The D7100 is a good choice too, but at current prices the D7000 is a lot of camera for the money. It is unlikely that you really ned the extra features of the D7100 for the extra cost.

If you can't afford a D7000 body then take a look at the D90, which is still a pretty good camera and will still work with the old lenses.

You will only feel a true upgrade if you get the D7100.

If you want a true upgrade, Go for Nikon D7100. Nikon D3200 is also a good one but if you are looking for perfect upgrade then i recommend D7100.
