Tips for shooting a show tonight?

Nikon d3100 and I just got the 35mm lens. The show will be a metal show in a small space, I'm assuming not well lit (but who knows it might be, the place is a deli during the day). Tips for capturing all the best moments? Is the 35mm the best lens to bring or should I bring my 18-55 kit lens? I know if I use auto all night I won't get the results I want, and I also want to use flash as little as possible. And I don't have a tripod.

Most gigs I shoot with a 28-75mm f/2.8, occasionally I use a 17-50mm f/2.8, but if I had to pick a prime then on an APS-C camera it would be a nice bright 35mm lens. I'd leave the kit lens at home, while it might give you the zoom, you'll not get the brightness.

Tips
Test your light levels before the gig starts.
Use the venue lighting to your advantage.
Pillars in the venue will help steady you, and protect you a little from any boisterous movement.
If you have to use High ISO then use it!
Grab the set list if you can, and if you want to get your photo's published you'll have a better chance if you can write a review too - even if it's only for the local paper!
Above all, have fun, and enjoy yourself!
