There have been several reports in photo magazines about these two lenses as well as others, and according to them the Tamron was a poor runner-up to all the others, although the Sigma wasn't all that good either (but definitely better than Tamron). Can you wait a while till you have saved up for the Nikon f/4.5 - 5.6 70 - 300 mm VR? I have one of those, which I bought about two years ago for £420, which was the cheapest it had been for a few years. It is a superb lens in all respects.

Tamron and Sigma have better lenses - these two you listed are notoriously iffy. I have the Sigma 70-300 DG Macro, got it free with the camera. It's basically a heap of junk - and the so-called Macro features on these lenses are not true 1:1 Macro. Shooting with these ultra cheap zooms at full zoom is like shooting through fog.

Have a look at this model instead, the Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG OS - it's a much better lens (no Macro, but that's no loss): http://www.techradar.com/...304/review
