I'd go with the Nikon myself.
Is the Nikon " better " than the Pentax? Matter of opinion.

My guess is that you are trying to get the most bang for the buck

That is fine, but you have to ask yourself which camera system you want to marry for the next couple of decades.

Here is how their sensors compare with the latest version of the D3100.

The Pentax is aimed at a higher market sector, equivalent to the D7000, and has little things like weather sealing.

It's a better camera than the D3100 because of this, but there's little to draw between them in actual performance, although I prefer Pentax' idea of putting their equivalent of VR in the body (where it can be used with any lens) rather than Nikon's lens-based system. The Pentax also has a body motor.

The K-r is not entry-level so expect it to be better spec'd than the D3100.It should be priced significantly higher too. If you're budget is low or if you are swayed by the salesman, get the Nikon. If you are after more value for your money and don't mind to be different, the K-r will satisfy you.
