I'm looking to buy a gift for someone. He loves astronomy and likes to take photos as a hobby.

I know nothing about the tools available, so I'm hoping someone who knows about this can help. What I'm looking for is a decent telescope for viewing planets with an attachment for a Nikon D7000.
He doesn't always have his camera with him, so I would prefer a telescope that is still useable without the camera. I can buy multiple parts if needed.

Ask a hobby shop selling telescopes.

It is easy to connect a camera to the telescope. The store selling the telescope should have the available connections. Just specify that you want a Nikon D7000 to connect to the telescope. There's a problem however. Shooting the heavens need very long shutter speeds. Since the stars move across the sky, they will blur in the picture. The telescope mount (the one between the tripod and the telescope itself) should have a motor and computer tracking system to be able to automatically follow whatever is being targeted in the sky. After the telescope, that active tracking system will be the next most expensive thing you will have to consider.
