Nikon D40 Bringing it back to life?

I have a Nikon D40 that the battery died some time ago. I just purchased a new battery from ebay thinking that this would fix the problem. However, after carefully charging it nothing happens. It is as dead as a door nail. Or is it?

Am I not doing something right? I'm wondering if the camera itself went out and if it did what do I need to bring it back to life and in working condition?

Are you certain you bought the right battery? Are you certain the charger is actually working? Take the camera, battery and charger to a real camera store and have them check the battery and charger.

The camera is not going to just "die" from not using it. If it was working when you put it away, it will work now. As Edwin said, your problem has to be something to do with the battery.

One thing has just occurred to me. You say the battery died "some time ago". Did you put the camera away with the old, dead battery still in the camera? You should never do that. The battery may have leaked and caused corrosion of the battery contacts inside the camera. Take a flashlight and look inside the battery compartment. Look if there's any powdery looking corrosion. If there's, then you will need to have the camera repaired. If there's no corrosion, then I believe your problem has something to do with the "new" battery you purchased from Ebay. While I have bought many great things from Ebay, a battery is something you really should not buy from Ebay. There's a huge market of cheap, poor quality Chinese fake batteries in existence, and most of them are sold on Ebay. Get a battery from a reliable source, such as a local battery store or from B-H in New York.
