Make sure you get the, 'HSM,' version, or it won't autofocus on your camera.

Repairing or replacing your 18-55mm is also a very good idea.

Yes, Sigma, Tokina, and Tamron all sell lenses with Nikon mounts. Just be sure to order it with a Nikon mount.

I take it that the kit lens that came with the camera quit working. Check the warranty. Most have a 5 year warranty. They will fix or replace it, if it hasn't been abused.

Another thing. If the 70-300mm is your only lens, you won't be able to get any wide shots, like family or friends group portraits, or landscapes. You really need the 18mm end of a 18-55mm lens for that.

Yet another thing. Sigma has at least two 70-300mm lenses. One with OS, the other without. In Sigmaese, OS stands for Optical Stabilizer. Most of us need that, especially when trying to hand hold at 300mm. So pay a little more and get the one with OS.

Andrew is right - you need an HSM lens if it is made by Sigma or an AF-S lens if it is made by Nikon or you won't get auto-focus.

If you want a lens which would replace your current one and give you more zoom as well as opticall stabilisation (OS, which is the same as Nikon's VR) and a close-up facility, I would recommend this one: http://www.jessops.com/online.store/categories/products/sigma/18-250mm-f-3-5-6-3-dc-os-hs-lens-for-nikon-af-89157/show.html?cm_mmc=td-_-affiliate_name-_-advert_id-_-236543
My wife uses one of those on her D5100 and it is a very good all-rounder.
