I'm wondering some good uses for a 70-300mm lens for a nikon d700 if you have one what do you use it for I'm just making sure that if I get it that it will suit my needs.

If you mean the 70-300mm AF-S VR, it is reputed to be a very good prosumer telephoto. Not quite as fast or sharp as the 70-200mm f2.8 AF-S VR, but not as heavy or expensive. It should look plenty sharp on the D700.
The 70-300mm lacks a tripod collar, and it is rather front heavy. A light duty tripod head can be difficult to adjust with it. A medium duty pan head like the Manfrotto MHXPRO-3W 3-Way could be a good choice.

If you mean the 70-300mm cheapo, don't waste your money on it.

70mm is good for portraits from more than 10 feet away like across a small pool or during the times you'd rather keep your toes dry while the model is in the water at the beach. From around 80mm to around 150mm, you will be able to capture details of subjects just out of your reach like the carving of the top stone of an arch at the doorway of a church. Beyond 150mm is for pulling distant objects closer to you which is good for candids and sports.

What are your needs? If you have to ask then save your money until you know what lens you need for the photos you wish to take

The 70-300mm is a zoom lens, in short - it brings far things closer without moving your leg

There are two Nikkor 70-300mm lenses, a good one and one not so good.
