I bought a used nikon d3200 today. It didn't come with an sd card but it seems to be working except I'm not able to take pictures without an sd card in it. Everything else seems fine, I was able to change settings on info and menu to use it manually. It's my 1st dslr camera so I've got plenty to learn from it. So is this normal that I'm not able to shoot without a memory card? I just wanna make sure there's nothing wrong with it before spending more $ on a memory card, I just don't know how if I could shoot without it. Couldn't find anything on google about it either.

Thanks for any help in advance. Your camera is perfectly fine.

It needs an SD card to save images and this camera is "fool proof".

* It will not allow you to take a photo without an SD card
* It will not allow you to take a photo when the lens is out of focus (unless you are in the manual focus mode)

Memory cards are really inexpensive and you need more than just one.

I suggest you buy two 16 gb, Class 10, UHS-I memory cards. Format both using the format feature in the camera before you start using your camera

You have a very nice fully adjustable camera and there's a learning curve, mainly learning the fundamentals of photography, lighting and composition. Learning these things can take a year or longer, so be patient with yourself Even supemarkets sell SD cards these days. Yes it is only designed to work with a formatted card inserted. Only ever re-format them in the camera's menu too. Do it on the PC and it usually corrupts it. All modern cameras are designed to be used with memory cards - SD in most cases. Some may have a very small memory built-in, but in practical terms you have to have a memory card in the camera to take pictures.

And just think, for about $20 to $40 you can have a card to store hundreds, or even thousands of pictures, as a one-off purchase. In the days of using film you had to buy the film, shoot it (only 36 pics on a film), then pay to get it processed and printed. About $6 to $10 per 36 pictures in total every time! The Nikon D3200 does not have any internal memory and requires an SD/SDHC/SDXC card to take pictures. SMFH! An SD card will cost under $10!
It's like buying a car and not wanting to to spend money on gas/petrol until you are sure it works! The only way to find out is toput in the gas/SD card and use it! Your camera MUST have an SD card to record photos and videos. It has no other way to do it. Download a manual from Nikon's official website. There's an option buried deep within the menu to enable shooting without a card. Just to add though. Without a card, all the pictures you take will be lost forever. Would you expect a film camera to take photos without film? Download the manual & read it. It will be very enlightning.
