Is the Nikon D3000 10.2 mp good?
I want to know if this camera takes good pictures and would be good as a starter camera for someone going into photography? (14 year old) I took some pretty good pictures with the nikon d40 sadly something happened with the shutter and think it would be better to just but a new one to upgrade. Is this nikon worth the money? (Obviously worth 200: P) Should I buy it? Also what are your pros and cons about this camera?

Added (1). I know it does not have a lens. Will the D40 lens work on it? Someone told me it would?
Yes, it is a good starter camera. I hope you are aware that this offer is for the body only. It will have to have a lens to work. In order for the lens to autofocus, the lens will have to have a motor in it, such as all the Nikon AF-S lenses, but not the AF lenses; most third party lenses, such as Tamron and Sigma, have the focus motor in them. Also, it has been superseded by the Nikon D3100 which was superseded by the Nikon D3200; just saying there are more modern versions of this camera.
It's a great camera for a 14 year old. It's been long discontinued, but will be fine for a few years. You will be able to learn a lot with it.
If you have that D40, you can use the lens on the D3000.
The D3000 is a fine camera for a starter. My eldest son has one and has taken some very nice photos with it. $200 is not a bad price for a used one, even without a lens.
B&H has a refurbished D3000 for $250, also without a lens. They typically they carry a nominal 90 day warranty from Nikon. I would buy the refurbished model over a used one, but it depends on the $50 difference.

Figure on $120 or so for a new 18-55mm kit lens, or a bit less for a refurbished lens, if that is the way you want to go.

They also have a refurbished D3000 with a VR version of the 18-55mm lens for $337, which is actually a better deal. Since the lens is going to cost you $120 or so (the VR version is usually around $200), the camera itself is about $200 - for a refurbished, not used.

Refurbished, at least from a reputable dealer such as B&H, will be a Nikon factory refurbished camera, and in fact may actually be new. They just can't sell them as new as they have gone back to the factory for check out and repair if needed.
They may be the result of a demo returned from a dealer, someone returning the camera, or even if a factory run did not meet specs, and they had to bring them up to spec.
Whatever the reason, a factory refurbished camera is better than buying used.
D3100.
B&H has a refurbished D3100 with a 18-55mm lens for $379. For the extra few dollars, I would go with this camera over the D3000, as there was quite a leap in capability with the D3100. For $50, it is a good investment.

D3200.
It is still current production, and refurbished is not saving you much money; $699 refurbished with lens:

I think the best cost/performance benefit of the bunch is the D3100 for $379.
Also and I'm not sure if anyone mentioned, this camera does not do video.
