Is a Nikon D3 good for Macro Photography?

Ups

I'm looking into a new camera to buy and I've been back and forth between Dx or Fx… My two choices of cameras, I think are completely opposite but I'm looking at a D7100 or possibly a D3? But i don't know if 12mp is goo enough just incase if I want to really blow a photo up. Any suggestions or tips?

The D3 is one of the greatest digital cameras ever made. It's a legend. However, its main area of expertise is in low light, high ISO and action.

That being said, there's no reason it can't do macro; and 12MP is enough for anything but the most enormous prints. It will also depend on how close the viewer stands to the photo, but 12MP is going to be enough in most cases.

The 7100 is of course the newer camera with a lot more MP. It's also a crop sensor, and might be better because it has a higher pixel density (which is apparently a good thing for macro - higher magnification - although I never shoot macro so I'm not speaking as an expert).

If your ONLY aim is to take macro shots, then the 7100 might be your choice (the lens of course will be important too; Nikon makes a number of macro lenses and apparently most of them are very good). But the D3 is even now an absolutely superb camera which will do things in low light and high ISO which will take your breath away. I think it depends on how much macro shooting you want to do in the grand scheme of things.

Here is a macro shot using a D3.html? Sort=6&o=14

This shot was taken at ISO 25,600 and there's still no noise in the shadow areas.

Most of my colleagues use 12 mp D300, D3 and D3s cameras. Some have substituted the Nikon D800E for the D3x

Absolutely it is when coupled with a good macro lens.

Almost more important is the quality of the macro lens.

Not without a macro lens.

With a macro lens yes.

All DSLRs are good for macro shots when used with a macro lens.

Is this a trick question? You're asking about an $8,000 camera!
The fact that you even mentioned "12 MP " is the clue to a rookie photographer.
You can save yourself thousands of dollars and buy the D7100 with a nice macro lens.
