Exposure Button on my camera isn't working?

I have a Nikon D40x. I went into town today to take some pictures, and noticed when I take a shot it comes out all white. I tried to lower the exposure by pressing the button and using the dial but it I couldn't see the number reducing. The shutter speed and f stop moved for me but I didn't want that. Any idea what I should do?

Changing the shutter speed and aperture IS how you adjust exposure.

Have you noticed the light meter inside your cameras viewfinder?
