DSLR microphone compatibility?

Sony ECM-CS3 - will it work with a Nikon D7000 DSLR?

I'm an audio newb. Does it matter what microphone I use for a DSLR? I don't have a zoom or any external audio source, so I'm slightly worried the mic may not work directly with the camera.

Stop asking the same question over and over again. It usually takes a while to get a question answered but if you are so impatient that you ask 5 times in a row most people just think you are rude or an idiot (and the possibility of both is not ruled out) so most people won't be bothered to answer.

Of the few people here who do have a Nikon D7000, I doubt that any have tried the Sony ECM-CS3 so I'll be surprised if anybody has direct experience of that combination. That means we're just looking at the specifications, the same as you are. Chances are if it fits it will work, but there are no guarantees. Try asking a dedicated Nikon online community if you are really worried.

Sure, I use two with my Canon… This is one of them.

This is the other

Both work just fine but you'll have to experiment with the camera as I've done to find exactly the right level for each - they put out different signal strength.

What matters foremost is the plug. Make sure it fits and double check if the camera indeed has that hole. As to the mic itself, it will go down to where you position it. In some cases, a separate digital audio recorder would do better. You would have to sync audio and video together in the computer though and that will require some bit of skill.
