Advice on going for a DSLR?

So I've been mulling this over for a few months but I'm going to get a DSLR. I've grown sick of getting back uploading my photos and thinking "that's not what it looked like". The one I've decided on is the Nikon d3100, seems like a pretty good entry level DSL but I'm now being baffled by all the add ons.
I'm going to Paris for my birthday next month and obviously would like to take the camera, as you can imagine funds are tight too because I'm saving for my holiday. Now I keep being told I need to buy extras for it like tripods and UV filters (some people say UV filters are completely pointless on modern DSLRs too)

What do I actually need to buy with the camera to take some nice photos in night and day?

Until you can learn to keep sticky fingers and mud off the front element of the lens, you need either a UV or NC (neutral clear)

Here is how a $90 UV filter saved my $800 lens

A hand full of 4 gb memory cards re good accessories. So is come kind of commercial image recovery program ($35 or so)

Of all the "accessories" I use, least are my tripod and electronic flash. That said, when I need a tripod, I need one, but it sits in my camera closet most of the time. The same for my external flash units.

This next weekend, I will be shooting a marathon. For this assignment I so need an electronic flash to use as fill. The next day, the batteries come out of the unit and it is stored with my tripod and monopod

Most photographers use just their camera and lens to create nice photos, day or night. You just need to hone your skills

I would probably advise you not to go for such an advanced camera if you don't feel confident about the settings etc in order to get a good photo. There are many good digital cameras on the market right now that are as good as DSLRs. I recently bought an Olympus Penn Mini and it is an amazing camera, you should take a look at it. Hope I helped!

You don't actually need any extras. If you buy the DSLR you will need a suitable SD card to store your pictures, and I would recommend you purchase a UV filter to protect the lens, (if you scratch the filter it is far cheaper to replace than if you scratch the lens).
The point about DSLR's is that they are versatile, you can add tripods, lenses, flashguns, filters etc. To suit the photography you want to do.
The thing is with photography, no camera can reproduce the image that is formed by the human eye and brain. You will never be able to take a picture that looks just like the scene you saw.
On the other hand a camera can take images that the human eye and brain could never form.
I would recommend taking a short course on photography or joining a local camera club to learn how to get the images you want to take.
Photography is a very rewarding hobby or even career once you understand how to get the most out of the equipment you have.

An UV filter helps keep the lens glass clean. A extra memory card won't hurt. A camera bag would be nice.

You need basic knowledge of photography. A D3100 is not automatically going to make any of your shots better. If I was going to Paris, I'd definitely bring a tripod so I can get some neat night shots, the UV filter serves as protection which is pretty useful in my opinion. I'll also get a spare battery and memory card as backup.

Have fun and good luck!
