How would achieve pictures like these with a Nikon D50? Could somebody give me a step by step guide as I've been experimenting but nothing I do seems to work.

What would the aperture, focal length, distance etc have to be?

1) what lens are you using?
2) do you know about depth of field?
3) do you know the basics of photography?

Nikon D50 6.1 mp

you are looking for depth of field, focal range, settings,
the distance of lights from camera, change with settings to create dispersed diffused glow,
Lens / Aperture Value / Shutter Speed,

example:
Nikon D50

with a 50mm 1.8D, Hand held
Exposure: (1/13)
Aperture: f/1.8
Focal Length: 50mm
ISO speed: 800

First, switch to manual mode. If you do not know how to use it, check out this guide:
http://knol.google.com/k/using-your-dslr-in-manual-mode#

Then, you can choose aperture priority, if you aren't as experienced with using manual mode. If you do not do this, then you will have to change all the other controls to get a good exposure.

Put the aperture up, to make a shallow depth of field. Do it until the background turns out blurry. Get closer to the subject, or zoom in if you have to.

Move the subject far away from the background too. If you can't do this, take the photo form an angle, so the "background" is further. Make sure the background is lit as well.

I believe reading these articles will help you more than what I or anyone else could say in here:

You can can have bokeh with any lens. What matters if it's good or bad bokeh (that is a quality of the lens, not something that you yourself can do).

maybe you are talking about depth of field. If so, read the manual the came with your camera.
