Which Nikon lens is better?

Nikon 28-100mm 3.5-5.6 autofocus lens or Nikon 35-70mm 3.3-4.5 autofocus lens?

I've seen a video on youtube of the 35-70mm and I see how it focuses and blurs the background but what's the difference between that and the 28-100mm 3.5-3.6 lens?

I'm a beginner to photography so I don't want an expensive fancy lens, just something to start off with.

Added (1). I'm getting the D70 but which is the better lens?

If you're buying a cropped-sensor model (most opt for the D3100/3200 or the D5100) neither will be much use, since they've no wideangle capability and won't autofocus - stick with the 18-55mm.

To be honest, buying a more expensive cropped-sensor model with motor, or a full-frame model in which these lenses would give wideangle capability, is a waste of money at this stage.

Additional;
Neither of these will give you a wideangle view with a D70.

Better is subjective. What characteristics of each lens is more important to you? Focal length or maximum aperture? The 28-100 has a better focal length range, but the 35-70 has a faster aperture.

But the differences between each lens are not significant, as they are pretty close in these specifications.

The kit lens that came with the D70 was a 18-70mm f/3.5~4.5, which is better than either of the ones you are looking at (or even the 18-55mm lens that comes with entry-level DSLRs). Try to find a D70 with the original18-70mm kit lens.
