Tips for shooting good photos in Forests?

I have a Nikon D80 with a sigma 'hyperzoom' macro (it's not a true macro lens) 28-200mm lens. I was wondering how to perfect the exposure in a forest because it can change a lot. Is it best to go early/late in the day or mid day because of the different light. I know how aperture, shutter priority, iso and white balance work. Any other tips would be appreciated, thanks.

Have in mind the image you want to capture. Recon good locations where the light will be where/when you want it.

Use the Photographers Ephemeris to help you.

Generally the colour temp and angle of light is best at dawn and dusk.

Above all READ your light meter and place the exposure how you want.

Read your user manual, and find out how to check the exposure with your internal light meter.

Or put it on auto.
