Well, I already have a Nikon d5100 but I really want a gopro hero4. Should I sell my nikon and buy the gopro or just stay with the nikon?

If you want to video yourself doing sports such as skate boarding, then the GoPro is the camera for you. But if you are videoing others and taking their pix, the Nikon D5100 would be the right camera.

You know exactly what you want. Sell the Nikon.

If you have to sell one car to buy another specialized car, that is up to you. That is what you will be doing.

I hope you know the differences between a fully adjustable digital SLR and a POV video camera.

You have about $800 invested in the D5100 with a single lens and are selling it at a loss to spend about $400 for a camera which is basically a specialized P&S camera with an emphasis for taking videos

Do you know someone who owns a GoPro? I suggest you borrow it for a day or two to see what it does. Unless you are doing a whole lot of skateboarding, motocross, BMX or other sports where a POV camera would make sense, you may not be happy with your choice.

I would think that buying a used GoPro for around $200 would be the first step to see if your type of photography requires a GoPro type camera.

I have a colleague who has a GoPro as well as some digital SLR cameras. In the year he has owned the GoPro, he has only needed to use it twice. He shoots assignments on a daily basis using his digital SLR camera

The Go Pro can be a fine choice for certain situations, but I think there are a lot more situations for which the Nikon D5100 is a much better choice. If you see the usefulness of a GoPro for your activities, I think you should try to find some other costs to cut to pay for it rather than liquidate your D5100 at a loss.
