Best settings to capture movement of light in nightclub photography?

I have a Nikon D90 with the kit lens
and I was just wondering what the optimum settings for nightclub photography would be?
I want to be able to capture people in focus (frozen) but I also want to be able to capture the movement of the lights. I will be using manual mode
example of what i mean:

Use a flash with a slightly longer exposure.

Try 1'' at f4 and you should get a similar result! (use the flash, but DON'T point it directly at your subject)
