Best lens for self portrait? (nikon d5100)?

I already own a 50mm 1.8G. I was planning to buy a 18-55mm VR or a 35mm 1.8 because the 50mm is ''TOO CLOSE'' for self portraits. Which one should I buy?

The 18-55mm is the best to go because it originally adds a stop making it a good lens. You never want a lens over 100.

The 50 mm lens is the right lens.

Your set up is just not quite right.

* place the camera on a tripod aimed at where you will be sitting, standing, whatever
* place a full length mirror next to your camera so you can see your poses.
* make sure that the background is plain and darker than your lighting
* set up the key and fill light properly
* use a wireless remote to shoot your self-portraits (ML-L3 Wireless, about $15 on Amazon)

Using the mirror, start posing and press the wireless remote to take shots. The distance from the camera to you is going to be about six feet for a 3/4 shot of you. Buying a wider angel lens will only cause some distortion of your face. There's a reason why the 50 mm lens is used for shooting portraits.

Note: The 18-55 mm usually comes with your D5100 and it is used to shoot landscapes (18 mm), group shots (18-24 mm range) full body shots (35-40 mm) and head and shoulder shots (55 mm)
