DSLR for first time user?

I'm a 24 year old guy very passionate about photography. I'm planning to buy my first DSLR within a budget of 34k INR with 18-55 lens.

I got many recommendations for Canon 600D and Nikon 5200. Also I came to know that Sony A58 with SLT technology can perform better in terms of video (with AF). With all these info I'm confused.

Can anyone please help me in making in the right decision.

The Sony can indeed offer more control over video shooting but the problem with the A58 is that it is the upgrade of the A37 (not the better A57 which has now been discontinued). So it has an LCD on the back that only flips and much lower resolution on it too. OK, they put a 2.4mp OLED viewfinder which is better and a larger 24mp sensor, but people taking video like the fully articulating LCD of Canon 600D and Nikon D5200. Sony A57 had an articulating LCD but it was mounted on a central ball joint at the bottom rather than at the side… Stupid idea if you need to be using a tripod, but very good for hand-held. I'd actually recommend the Sony A57 over the Canon or Nikon you mentioned. On my A57 there's an 18-135 Sony lens which focuses fast and very quietly.

If one day you wish to become a pro photograper then Canon or Nikon are recommended because of tradition and their more comprehensive set of accessories and support services. Canon 60D would be a better place for you to start now because with the 70D just announced, prices will be keen.

You need to do some more independent research.

While Sony SLT cameras are easier to use when shooting video than Nikon or Canon, most of us by a dSLR to shoot stills.

The number of lenses available for Nikon and Canon cameras is huge when compared to those made by Sony for their cameras.

When shooting video from a script, it is rare that you would use auto-focus. Just look at the programs you see on television. All those are shot in the manual focus mode so that the DP can isolate specific subjects based upon the script they are shooting.

Here are links to the lenses made by Nikon and Canon for their dSLR cameras

I will let you visit the Sony website to see what lenses are available there

And here is how the sensors of those three cameras compare

As you can see, if you are looking for high performance in low light, the D5200 is the camera for you

The Sony DSLR camera's are PACKED with "Spec". However look at the price of the Sony lens… BLOODY expensive.
It is a shame you "Missed the boat" with the Nikon D90. This was a very good machine. However you could go for the Canon 600d if you are OK "Plastic feel" of the body.
Avoid the Canon 1100d and 100d… They feel like Kinder egg toys. WHY do Canon scrimp on build quality on it's budget DSLR camera's?
The D7000 is starting to get cheap now. However they had some issues over AF and have a tendency to overexpose in some situations.
I recommend you start off cheap and when you get use to using a DSLR camera, THEN you buy a camera with more "Buttons" fitted. The D7100 has too many "Buttons" for a first time DSLR user, It will just frustrate you.
The D3100 is still available on Amazon. It is a SUPERB first DSLR camera. So nice to use for a "Newbie" look after it and you will still get the bulk of your money back when it comes to resale time.
If you MUST have 24MP then the D3200 is also a good buy.
(You do know that if you took a photo taken with a 14MP D3100 and a 24MP D3200 printed them both out on a 12x8 inch size you would NOT be able to tell the difference)
I would choose the D3100 for a first DSLR. Then when you are ready for more "Buttons" you will have no problem selling it.
