I prefer to buy from either B&H (bhphotovideo.com) or Adorama.com. You won't find a lower price on cameras because the manufacturers have price-fixing policies called Minimum Advertised Price. Since the price is the same, getting it from NY as opposed to amazon or bestbuy, means not having to pay sales tax.
However, if you have an independent camera shop near by, I would see if they can make you a deal on a entire kit. Often they won't budge on the camera or lens, but may give you a 10% discount on accessories.

If you don't mind buying gray market, the eBay is a great option. Just be aware of the pitfalls of buying gray-market items. They're not counterfeit or anything like that at all. Gray market is just an item intended sold in a country/region for which it was not intended. The down side is that you won't get a warranty. Nikon, for example, won't honor the warranty if the country of purchase is not the same as the country the item should have been sold in. In fact, their service center will refuse to even repair it stating that they don't have tools or parts for this camera and that you need to ship it to XYZ country for repairs, which by the way, mean no warranty + over-seas shipping (both ways) and insurance (both ways). The up side, you save some cash with little risk as Nikon stuff hardly ever breaks. But when it does…

If you should buy off of eBay, keep in mind that there are a lot of counterfeit Nikon and Canon DSLRs. If you're not getting a DSLR, then don't worry about it. Just be careful, and avoid any deal that looks too good to be true.

A much safer way to buy a good digicam is buying used from places like B&H, Adorama, and especially KEH.com. KEH is probably the best place on line to buy used gear. Their equipment is always in better-than-advertised condition, and their gear comes with a 6-month warranties too. Best buy http://www.bestbuy.com/...stbuy.com/" rel='nofollow' class='ext_link'>http://www.bestbuy.com/...stbuy.com/ If you plan on that vacation in less than a month, THEN put off your purchase until you get back. I sold cameras for 10 yrs and it was always YOU who got the defective ones. The guy who waits until "just" before an important event to make his purchase. You need time to not only learn how your particular camera responds but also get really use to it, so that you can concentrate on the subject matter, not operating the camera.

Good Luck!
