Most Nikon SLR lenses will work on Nikon DSLR cameras, but not all autofocus lenses will work with autofocus on all Nikon bodies.

The Nikon D40, D40x, D60, D3000, D3100, D3200, D5000 and D5100 bodies all require AF-S lenses for autofocus. I believe that all of the other Nikon bodies have the older autofocus motor mechanism for the older AF-D style lenses.

Most of the old lenses will still be very good, but old wide-angle lenses might distort on a DX body. I have an old Sigma 18-35mm lens which is ultra-wide on my old Nikon film 75mm camera. It is just a standard zoom on my D7000, equivalent to an 27-52mm angle of view in 35mm terms. The lens is not particularly useful on DX because of its huge front element which was needed for the ultra-wide angle on the 35mm film body.

If old lenses are used on a DX body they might feel overly large and heavy compared to a DX lens, but they should not suffer from any vignetting and little drop-off in edge quality, because they are designed for a much larger frame.

Some of them will fit on DSLRs, but a few older ones won't. Some camera bodies can't meter with older lenses. Even some autofocus lenses won't fully function with entry level DSLRs. Each lens must be evaluated on it's own. While some technology has pushed lenses forwards, business has driven the quality down in other areas. You'll find good and bad Nikkors from every period of the company's history.

Here's a breakdown:

1) Pre-AI - These are the oldest Nikkors, usually they are labeled Nikkor followed by the letter T, Q, P, H, S, O, N, UD, QD, or PD. Won't fit due to lack of AI-coupling ridge. Can be modified to AI (class 2)
1a) Invasive Pre-AI - won't fit on any DSLR, can't be modified.
2) AI/AI-S/Converted AI/Series-E - AI/AI-S won't have a letter after them, but will still have the rabbit ears. Converted AI will look like Pre-AI lenses, but you'll find that it has an AI-coupling ridge on the aperture ring. Series E lenses are manual focus lenses which don't have Rabbit Ears. Fits on all DSLRs, full function on D7000, D800/E, and D4 (via AI coupling ridge). Stop down metering on D200, D300/S, D700, D1-series, D2-series, D3-series. No metering on other DSLRs.
3) AI-P - Rare lenses, have a CPU so metering on All DSLRs, however manual focus still.
4) AF - The first generation AF lenses, don't have AF motor. Meters on all DSLRs.AF only works with D50, D70/S, D80, D90, D100, D200, D300/S, D700, D800/E, D7000, D1/2/3/4-series.
5) AF-S/AF-I - Later AF lenses with internal motor. Fully compatible on All DSLRs.

Any Nikkor AF, AF-I and AF-S lenses will work on Nikon dSLR cameras. If you have a better than entry level Nikon dSLR, they will work just fine. If you purchased an entry level Nikon (less than $1, 000), the auto-focus will only work if you have/buy AF-S lenses

If you do NOT mind learning to manually focus lenses, any of the Nikkor AI manual focus lenses will work on the more advanced Nikon cameras

Here is a complete list of all the Nikkor lenses and which cameras they work with.
