Why won't my computer recognize my camera?

So, I plug in my Nikon L105 to upload pictures via usb cable, but my computer doesn't even realize something's plugged in. My mouse is plugged in via usb cable and it works fine, but nothing happens when I plug in my camera. The cable is perfectly fine, never been damaged. What's the deal?

Is the camera turned on when you plug it in? It should be.
Also there should be a setting on your camera, that lets you decide if its detected as a camera, or a USB storage device. Try both settings.

If that doesn't work try taking it to a professional and have them take a look at it.

Is the mouse plugged into that particular usb, because it could be the usb that you plug your camera into.

The best way to transfer the images is with a USB memory card reader. You can find them for around $10 in almost any store… Even the grocery store I go to has them next to the batteries and blank CDs.

Here is the work flow I follow:

1) Format the memory card with the camera before using it for the first time
2) Take photos/video
3)Download the memory card content to your computer using a USB card reader if the computer does not have a built-in card reader
4)Verify the transfer was a success
5)Back up the files on your computer to another hard drive (or CDs)
6)Format the memory card with your camera (and not with the computer)

Do this at the end of every day that you take photos/video

There's one very simple solution to this very common problem that so many people who try to download photos from the cameras to the computer where many of Us Regulars typically would suggest to be using a Card Reader. A Card Reader can be found at many Electronic stores and doesn't cost that much.

When I used the card reader my memory card was damaged by taking it in and out of the camera so often and eventually stopped working. I'd used less than 5% of the card capacity when it stopped working and it had cost ne £80, so I'd prefer to stick to using a cable in future as I can't afford to keep buying new cards. .
