If you're asking this question, you aren't ready for a decent camera.

I prefer Pentax, Sony and Olympus make great cameras, and Canon and Nikon spend a lot on advertising.

Fujifilm make cheaper bridge cameras, Hasselblad and Leica make very high quality cameras that will blow either of them out of the water, and if you want to go by sales, KMZ have sold more precision cameras than both combined.

Well as you see from the answers you have already received both these makes have people firmly encamped fiercely allied to one make or the other. None of this has much to do with the tool that is carefully designed and developed over many many years to take still pictures.
Almost any camera in the right hands can be made to produce a work of quality, art even, its the eye of the photographer that determines the result. The quality of the mechanics and electronics in the device allow for sharper imaging, better contrast etc etc Quicker focusing etc. And better handling in general are a benefit too.
What you need to realise is that today we're so lucky to have such a wide range of absolutely wonderful cameras, the parts of which I believe make more than the whole, they are almost magic and a package superb engineering and knowledge.
It almost makes no sense to me to ask the question as both makers are at the top of their fields, yo can't go wrong with either.
