I'm planning to buy an entry level SLR.
Please advice which should i opt for Canon or Nikon.
I do not want to invest much on the lenses although i would like ample zoom.
Please advice which would be the best option below Rs 35000.
I do know that if a camera has inbuilt autofocus the lenses can come cheap.
Please advice with reasons?

Look! In this budget i would recommend two cameras from Nikon: The Nikon D3100 & The Nikon D5100! For Canon i would recommend The Canon 550D(Rebel t2i)! See, You will get the Nikon D3100 for approx 27-28 thousand (with 18-55mm VR kit )! The prices of Nikon D5100 and Canon 550D are approximately same! They are around 38 thousand ( with 18-55mm VR kit )! I know it is a bit out of your budget! But believe me, by just investing 2-3 thousands more you can get a way better camera! Now getting on what all these cameras gives you! Lets first talk about the Nikon D3100! See, it is a really really basic camera! Like it is specifically made for those people who know nothing about DSLRs and photography! It will guide you with each basic step and teach you what all functions in the camera mean! But it is a real basic camera! I personally would recommend you to go with either Nikon D5100 or Canon 550D! Both of these cameras are really amazing! Not only these cameras are for beginners but it will even give you some space to advance from a beginner to an intermediate! See i personally feel that the D5100 has better image quality than the 550D! While the 550D is better at videos! The thing is that ( what many people say that its a drawback of D5100) D5100 does not have manual exposure during video recording! That means you do not have full control over the settings during the video recording! Although you can set the aperture before switching to live view! But it does not mean its video quality is bad! It is still really good, but it can't be as good as 550D because in 550D you can manually set all the things during video recording! But at the same time D5100 is better at Stills! Now you have to think what do you need camera primarily for?! If it is for images, go for D5100! If it is videos go for 550D! So by my side go either for Nikon D5100 or Canon 550D! Else do check these camera's reviews on internet! Hope you make a good Choice!

Nikon D3100 is an amazing camera for the price, especially for someone getting their first DSLR. I got this camera, because I'm about to have a little girl and I wanted to take better pictures than I could with my Droid. Now that I have it, and have taken some pictures, I want to take more pictures of everything. I see amazing shots all around me everyday now.

It does have a little bit of a learning curve to it, if you've never used a DSLR (I think all DSLRs do though). There are only two complaints that I have. The first one is a lack of AEB (automatic exposure bracketing). I've seen some really amazing shots that are HDR (high dynamic range) images. The easiest way to do these kinds of shots is with AEB, but that option is reserved for the higher end Nikons. You can still achieve HDR shots without AEB, but you need to either use the timer to reduce shake, or a remote shutter. Which brings me to my second issue with this camera. The D3100, from my understanding, replaces the D3000. The D3000 has an infrared sensor on the front for using a wireless remote shutter. For some reason Nikon removed the sensor from the D3100. You can still purchase a corded remote, or a wireless remote that comes with a wired sensor, but it would have been nice if Nikon had made it easier to take HDR shots on this camera. If you are aware of these two things, and still purchase the camera, I think you will be happy.
