What lens would be good to replace my Nikon 18-55mm kit lens?

I'm an amateur portrait photographer and am looking into replacing the 18-55mm kit lens. I have a 40mm f2.8 macro lens that I use for close up shots, but I'm looking for a lens that can counterbalance what I use that lens for. I like the range of the 18-55 mm, but the lens is old and the focusing is a little off. What would be a good lens to replace this in quality and function? I'm looking into the Nikon 18-105mm f3.5, the Nikon 18-140mm f3.5, or maybe the Sigma 17-70mm f2.8. I would love to find a lens that can still be used for close up shots but that I can also use for group shots or to get more of the scenery in the picture. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

Do NOT replace that lens.

Instead, add lenses to your camera system.

Since you are planning on shooting portraits and already have a 40 mm macro (which can be used to shoot portraits), look at a good used Nikkor AF-S 85 mm f/1.8 lens

If and when you need extra reach for shooting sports or action, then look at the NIkkor AF-S 70-300 mm VR lens.

Just make a list of the lenses you think you need and then start saving your pennies and add one lens at a time to your camera system

Here is a link that should help you decide which lenses will be on your list.

I would recommend the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 which is an excellent VFM lens and it can easily replace the kit lens. Sigma 17-70 f/2.8 - 4 is also a very good lens and @ $399, it has IS and Macro function. Anyways, get whichever you think fits your needs.

Among those you listed, I'm leaning towards the Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8 for it's speed and short zoom range which starts at a slightly wider angle of view than the original lens.

I've done magazine quality photos with the 18-55mm lens… Portraits as well.
Maybe the 50mm 1.8g? I've done portraits with that as well.
