They will automatically recognize the lens and crop the image. A 12MP D3 will shoot a 5MP image. A 36MP D800 will shoot an 18MP image. Etc…

New FX bodies will adjust automatically and take a smaller sized picture. Older FX bodies will produce small pictures with large and dark fuzzy borders. There's even a chance that the DX lens will scratch the reflex mirror of the FX body and damage it.
