IF: Internal Focus
Focus is accomplished through movement of internal lens elements, without effecting the overall outside length of the lens.

This also means that the front element of the lens does not rotate. When using filters such as split and or polarizers, having IF is highly desirable. IF lenses also typically focus faster and since there's no barrel extension, the lens is better sealed against dust and debris like sand from entering the through the front of the lens barrel.
