The tripods that Nikon puts its name on often are not very good. There are several good tripods. Manfrotto makes some very good medium priced tripods. If you don't have to carry it in a pack, generally bigger is better. If you do want it for traveling lighter, selecting a balance between compactness and performance becomes more complicated. Carbon fiber gives better strength to weight than aluminum, but it is much more expensive.
You can't use a tripod that is not there, so often compactness matters. You want the thing to be useable when you get there. Pocket tripods require you to have a suitable working surface, and they may collapse under weight or imbalance that a bigger tripod could handle. It helps to experiment before the wonderful photo opportunity comes and goes.
