Should I get a mirrorless Sony a6000 or Nikon d3500/5600?

I suggest you take a Very serious look at Pentax.

It would Probably be better to start with a DSLR rather than a mirrorless,
partly because it's good to know how using an SLR camera "feels".

The best thing you can do before buying any camera is
go to physical camera stores and get some hands-on time with various models of both types.

Get whatever fancies you. Since you're new, you'll adapt to the camera. You'll get the same picture no matter what camera you buy.

As for the lenses, get the camera with a kit lens. It's cheaper that way. The kit lens is usually a standard zoom lens (18-55mm) that can shoot wide (some landscapes and large group shots), normal (most people, pets and whatnots), and short-telephoto (portraits or headshots). If you can afford better, opt for a longer standard zoom (like the 18-105mm or 18-400mm). The higher it goes, the more flexible you become. Longer focal lengths allow you to make distant objects seem near. One thing though, the longer the zoom a lens has, the poorer optical quality gets. Treat it as your learning lens. That's why most of the time, the kit lens is best for the simple reason that it's the cheapest. Don't worry. As you get better, you'll know exactly what other lenses to get later.

I'd go with the D5600 over these three options. What kind of freelance work? There are tons of different kinds which may or may not need a D5600 let alone a DSLR.

Since you are doing work for pay, you need a sturdy and reliable camera - the D3500 is reliable for most beginners, but definitely not good enough for pro work. Plus the D3500 doesn't have an internal AF motor which will limit you in the number/types of lenses that you can use.

I would definitely not even consider the Sony A6000 because it doesn't have a viewfinder nor does it have a TTL hot shoe. Both are two MAJOR features that you will need.

Keep in mind that Nikon announced that the D5600 will not be replaced. The line of D5xxx series is officially dead. Why? Because Nikon, like the rest of the industry, is going mirrorless. With that said, it would be a better to compare the D5600 with the A6500. In this case, I'd go with the A6500 unless you need faster AF such as when taking basketball or hockey games. But doing social events is basically mindless for even the cheapest of mirrorless or DSLR; it's really not technically challenging for any mirrorless or DSLR. However, if you want to shoot hand-held without a flash, then you will need to go with a camera that has IBIS.

Another option is the Nikon Z6 or Z7, but considering how great Sony's GM lenses are, Sony is really kickin' Nikon and Canon's but and is quickly becoming the pro's choice.
