Old nikon slr won't take pictures all the time depending on settings?

My nikon won't take pictures cause of lighting sometimes and i don't know what settings to put to make it take pictures

The settings depend on light level and on the ISO of the film. In sunny daylight, on 100 ISO negative film try 1/125 at f11, cloudy 1/125 at f5.6. Indoors it's very variable, but in a normal living room in a house on 400 ISO film try 1/30 at f2 at night. That should get you going. Maybe buy a light meter.
