Nikon or Canon for d-slrs?

Being a Canon owner and shooter this is the only brand, besides Fuji, that I recommend. I own both brands and have had excellent results with both.

You're going to get different recommendations based on experience and brand loyalty so pick the one you like best.

I'd rather have Pentax, some prefer Sony (better video) and Olympus' E(volt) DSLRs are the smallest and lightest around.

Find a dealer, tell him what you're willing to spend and handle a couple of candidates - it's YOUR choice, after all.

Visit a proper camera store and hold the Nikon D3200 and Canon T3i/600D in your hands to see which you like the best

Here is how their sensors compare

I tell people the same thing…

The best thing to do is visit an actual camera shop (not bestbuy/walmart) and try the different models within your budget to see which feels the best to you AND they can answer your questions about the cameras. I bought a Canon for its ergonomics/feel/menu and control layout while a fellow photog chose Nikon for the same reason… It is about personal preference.

Photography is roughly 70% photographer skill/experience, 20% lens quality, and 10% camera body. I would rather have a $600 camera with a $1, 500 lens than I would a $1, 800 camera and a $300 lens

I agree with the other answerers. Another possibility to consider is whether you can borrow lenses and accessories from friends, because they probably won't be compatible with the other brand.
