Nikon experts help. 60mm micro/macro lens?

Hiya
I got a 60mm Afs 2.8 macro (or as nikon calls it Micro) lens for xmas.
Its quality and v.close but I have seen pictures done using the same lens which are super duper close… Like flies eyes and spider eyes etc… And having fiddled with it I can seem to find that level of magnification. Do people use ext tubes to get this close or is there something I'm not doing?

The Nikon AF-S Micro-Nikkor 60mm f/2.8G ED Macro Lens provides an exceptional range of applications and high-quality performance. Compact and versatile, this lens is perfect for close-up, copy and general photography. Its Close-Range Correction (CRC) system ensures high resolution from infinity to close-ups down to 7.3", with a 1:1 reproduction ratio.

The 60mm Micro lens features ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements that ensure superior optical performance. The SWM (Silent Wave Motor) and IF (Internal Focusing) features ensure fast and quiet focusing action, and the nine-blade rounded diaphragm makes out-of-focus elements blend smoothly to produce natural-looking, harmonious backgrounds.

While extension tubes can certainly extend the macro range, are you getting as close as the lens will allow you?

Put it into manual focus (which most macro photographers do) and see how close is close.

An editing technique called cropping is used.here is an example of a photo before and after cropping.
