G = no aperture ring
ED = contains at least one element of extra low dispersion glass
D= the lens passes the focus distance to the camera
IF-= internal focussing, the front element stays still during focus (but may rotate during zoom)
VR is indeed vibration reduction.

AF-S: built in wave motor enabling autofocus with entry-level Nikon DSLRs.

DX: lens is designed for the DX format, meaning its not fully compatible with 'pro' bodies such as the Nikon D700 and D3.

Nikkor: this is the brand of the lens.

35mm: this is the focal length of the lens. Used on a DX camera, it will translate to a 50mm lens in full-frame terms.

f/1.8: This is the f/stop. The smaller the number, the larger the aperture, and the more sensitive it is to light.

G: guilded, meaning it lacks an aperture ring. This is usually not important to most people unless you happen to be using an old manual-focus film camera.

VR: vibration reduction. Useful in low light when you don't have a tripod with you.
