Is nikkor 18-55mm a good starting lense?
Depends what you are shooting…
just basic photography, yes…
macro photography, no…
landscape photography, yes…
portrait photography, maybe…
wildlife photography, no…
most people just get a DSLR without really thinking about what they want to shoot… And think it is cheap and easy - it isn't…
Yes. Manufacturers have determined that about 90% of the photography done by beginners can be done with an 18-55mm lens so that's why its the focal length included with entry-level DSLR cameras.
I always suggest that beginners spend 4 to 6 months using their new camera and lens before even thinking about adding a second lens to their kit.
Yes, I think it's a good starting lens. The focal range is well-suited for basic photography and the lens operates really well in good lighting conditions (usually outside in the daylight). For indoor/poor lighting conditions, it can be ok as long as you have a newer Nikon that allows you to bump up the ISO sensitivity a fair amount (this is because the 18-55 doesn't have a very wide maximum aperture) without getting to much annoying noise (grain). As you get more artistic, you will probably have different needs this lens can't satisfy, but I'll bet you could get a lot out of this lens for a year or so.
Ya, it's a pretty decent starting lens. And because it goes down to 18mm, you still get a bit of a wide angle.
But if you want to get into portrait photography, I personally find that it can be somewhat difficult because it only goes as low as f/3.5. But for a starting lens, it's great.
