Is there a difference between Macro & Micro?

Guest

Nikon calls it micro while most of the other photography world says macro

is it the same thing with a different name or is there a difference?

example: my 85mm Nikon lens says Micro on it

Macro lenses let you produce a 1:1 ratio photo (give or take) Micro lenses are capable of photographing smaller objects such as insects. Hope this helps

BriaR is right, in practical terms.

Micro use to be "much bigger than 1:1", usually achieved by photographing through a microscope, but that idea has been long forgotten.

They are both the same. Nikon calls them micro, everyone else calls them macro.

Both terms are perfectly valid, they are not opposites!

Macro, means everything. In terms of a lens this is taken to mean every detail.
Micro means small, so it then means looking at the smallest detail.

Anyone who tells you that it means some fixed ratio is incorrect (though it's a very popular misconception).

Micro is just Nikons designation for it's range of macro lenses, nothing more.

No difference…

Nikon calls it "micro"

Everyone else on the planet calls it macro.
