Is a nikon 105 micro vr also a good lens for portraits on a dx body?
Is a nikon 105 micro vr also a good lens for portraits on a dx body?
It is an excellent portrait lens for an FX body, but a bit too long for a DX
Look at the 60 mm micro VR for shooting portraits with a DX camera.
The portrait lenses used on 35 mm and FX cameras are the 85 mm and 105 mm lenses. If you do the math, that means a 60 mm lens on your DX is equivalent to a 90 mm lens, perfect for portraiture
It is if you've got the room to backup a bit. As fhotoace says it's a bit long. It depends on how much room you have & whether you want full body or just head & shoulders.
I use an 85mm on a DX body for portraits & that's a great lens.
While 85mm is the classic portrait focal length, the recent trend of many portrait photographers, such as Joe McNally, is using the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 lens, although on a FX body. They backup 30 feet in some cases. They feel this can sometimes provides a better candid shot as the camera is not in the face of the subject.
It also gives them a bit more depth-of-field to work with, as f/2.8 is sometimes too shallow if you are too close to your subject.
A lot of wedding photographers are going to the 70-200 as well. Its not just for sports anymore.
With longer telephoto lengths being the current trend, the 100mm lens - even on a DX body is not outside of that parameter. You will have to be a bit further away, but again, it is probably going to result in more candids.
The thing is, there's no right or wrong way in photography, if it works. If you have that lens, just try it and see if it works for you.
