Is a.270 good for moose caribou and elk?

I have a 30 year old.270 browning semi-automatic that i keep as close to squeaky clean out of respect for my late grandfather. It now bears a plaque with his name, date of birth and death, and a saying that reminds me of how he lived. It also has a picture of him taped to the stock along with my first deer i killed and the one i killed a week to the minute after he died.

In truth I have never shot anything bigger than a white tail deer with it. I have even killed turkey with it no problem and minimal meat loss. I eventually want to go and have read many forums for and against it primarily because of the bullet size and weight. I shoot 150 grain Winchester bullets out of it already so i'm used to that amount of kick. I have heard of their top of the line supreme elite xp3 bullet and was wondering if that bullet will be good enough.

Also I have missed only twice ever with this gun. The first time was because i was new to hunting and had major buck fever. The second time was because the original scope that was put there by my grandfather finally wore out and started floating. This floating did not show up until after i had sighted it in earlier that fall and accidentally injured a deer at my uncle's lease. It has since been replaced with a good quality Nikon.

I know i'm giving a lot of details about my gun but i'm very very partial to it. I would love to go someday and since i feel comfortable shooting it I would love to take it with me.

Thank you in advance for all your help. If you can provide ballistic tables with your favored bullet in addition to your experience that will be most helpful. I'm from Texas and have never been before.

Wow, too much info there my friend, but got what you're asking.yes a.270 winchester will take moose, caribou and elk with a good vital shot, no question about.

Yes

The 130 was the 'standard' bullet weight and 150 to 160 were for elk and moose.

The smallest reasonable elk gun is the 25-06, 257 roberts, and 250 savage, although all those require short to moderate range. The 270 has taken a LOT of elk.

To be honest, if you were asking about buying a 270 for moose I'd say get a 30-06 and use a 180 or even a 200 grain bullet. However, being that you already have a fine 270 winchester, yes, you will be fine for moose.

Caribou are practically made for the 270, they sit between white tail and elk in size.

I say start out on a caribou hunt, then move to elk, and then if you still want go for moose.

Hunter, Thanks for the story… Your 270 will handle all three. My only recommendation is that you choose the appropriate round, you may have to bump up to 160 gr. For the moose and elk… Add a couple more pics to that rifle. Best of luck yo you… DL

* Yes its very similar in performance to a 30-06.* Jack O'Connor the Famous Outdoor Writer and African Big Game Hunter swore by the awesome performance of the 270 caliber Rifle.* I prefer to use the 150 grain Remington Core-Lokt Bullet myself for Moose, or Deer size animals.*

I didn't read all of the BS, but to answer your question, I would say that it would be a little light for moose.

You have a fine rifle there, and it will be perfectly adequate for the game you have mentioned. One of the other guys mentioned The late Jack O'conner who did more than any other person to establish the reputation of the.270 worldwide. I remember One of O'conner's stories in regards to a moose he shot with the 130 grain Remington Bronze point ammunition. O'conner stated that he found all the little bronze point wedges under the skin on the far side of the Moose. So, if it can be done with the 130 grain bullet, then it will be a piece of cake for the 150 to 160 grain bullet. I would prefer a bullet that penetrates all the way through on a broadside shot, to leave an adequate blood trail in case the shot is not instantly fatal. The.270 is also MY favorite rifle of all time. With proper ammunition, I would not hesitate to take on the largest bears with one.

, 270 Win is plenty capable of taking moose, caribou, and elk; just as long as the shooter does their part.
